340.Lines on the Bible.

—In a small volume of Sacred Poetry, in the possession of a friend of mine, the following lines on the Bible are ascribed to Byron:

"Within this awful volume lies

The mystery of mysteries;

Oh! happiest they of human race

To whom our God has given grace

To hear, to read, to fear, to pray,

To lift the latch, and force the way:

But better had they ne'er been born

Who read to doubt, or read to scorn."

Not having met with these lines in the works of Lord Byron, can any of your readers say whether they are his, or not, or who is the author?
